Obituary of William J. “Buzzy” McClements, Jr.

William J. “Buzzy” McClements, Jr. Of Shadyside on Friday, December 24, 2021, passed away from complications do Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam.

William J. "Buzzy" McClements, Jr.

Beloved husband of Nancy Clark McClements; father of William Robert McClements (Renee) and Megan McClements Smith (Mark); grandfather of Lucy and Tatum Smith and Matthew, Samuel and Zachary McClements; son of the late William J. Sr. and Barbara McClements; step-brother of John T. Johnson and Barbara Johnson; brother-in-law of John (David) and Kevin (Lori); uncle to many beautiful nieces and nephews; son-in-law of Marcella Clark.

Bill was a graduate of Liberty Elementary and Peabody High School.

From 1979 to 2001 he was the owner of Bill McClements Optical Company, with offices in Shadyside and O’Hara Township.

Bill was a member of the Emory Methodist Men’s Bible Class, which he was able to attend with his father. The class worked outreach to the East Liberty Community. Bill also worked as an adjunct instructor for 13 years at the Western School of Health and Business Careers, teaching contact lens fitting.

While his son and daughter attended Sacred Heart Elementary Grade School, he coached his daughter’s softball team: the girls won a Section A Championship and one parish wide championship. Bill also served 2 terms as the Commissioner of baseball and softball at Sacred Heart.

After closing his optical business, Bill went back to taking classes in information Technology. Those classes landed him a one-year appointment to work for the US Geological Survey, where he worked as a Hydrologic Technician, measuring water flow on the Savannah River in Georgia and South Carolina.

Upon graduation from high school in 1964 he joined the United States Marine Corps, graduating from Parris Island South Carolina. His duty stations were Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Vieques Island Pero Rico, and the Marine barracks in Washington, DC where he participated in ceremonial duties. His final duty station was South Vietnam where he served 1967-1968 with the First Marine Division during the Tet Offensive. He was wounded on February 7th, 1968. Bill obtained the rank of Sgt E5 noncommissioned officer. Personal and unit awards include: Purple Heart, Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat V and Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze stars, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation, Gallantry Cross with Palm, Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation with Gallantry Cross with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Rifle Expert and Pistol Sharpshooter.

Bill was a Lifetime Member of the VFW Post 1810 Brentwood and also Lifetime Member of the Disabled American Veterans Pittsburgh Chapter 76.

Bill’s happiest days were spent spending time watching football with his wife Nancy.

Friends received at McCabe Bros Inc. Funeral Home, 6214 Walnut Street, Shadyside on Wednesday, 2-4 and 6-8 pm. A religious service will be held in Allegheny Cemetery, Lawrenceville on Thursday at 11 am, followed by full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Wounded Warriors, Marine Corps League Chapter 310, or Animal Rescue League. Condolences may be left at www.mccabebrothers.com

Farewell and Semper Fi ~ Edward John Barron, Jr

Ed BarronEdward John Barron, Jr., age 84, of Allison Park, passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2021.

Born February 3, 1937 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Edward J. and Agnes (Nuner) Barron, Sr. He was married on April 25, 1959 at St. Gabriel Church to Elizabeth “Betty Ann” (Stokes) Barron.

Edward worked in sales in the heating and air conditioning industry for 40 years, including 20 years at R.E. Michael Company.

Ed was a proud veteran of the Marine Corp and a member of Three Rivers Leatherneck Detachment 310 and also the quartermaster of Detachment 310. He loved to go hunting, especially with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Ann Barron, of Allison Park; two daughters, Denise Barron of Cranberry Township and Beth Ann (David) Kelly, of Richland Township; , grandchildren, Derek (Kelly) Hathazy, Kevin (Megan) Kelly, Sara (Adam) Sporrer, Bryan Kelly and great granddaughter, Sage Hathazy.

Ed’s family will welcome friends from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 P.M. on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at King Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 2841 Woodland Circle in Allison Park, PA.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, November 12, at St. Catherine of Sweden Roman Catholic Church, 2554 Wildwood Road in Allison Park.

He will be laid to rest at Holy Savior Cemetery in Gibsonia.

The family suggests Memorial donations may be sent in Ed’s honor to Good Samaritan Hospice, 134 Marwood Road, Cabot, PA 16023.

Joseph A. LaPlace, Sr.

Age 74, of McCandless Twp., passed away on Saturday, September 4, 2021.

Beloved husband for 41 years of Sharon (Lusky); Loving father of Joseph LaPlace, Jr. and Steven LaPlace (Melissa); Proud grandfather of Piper; Also survived by loving relatives and friends.

Joe was a proud Marine. He served his country in Vietnam with the 3rd Recon Battalion Charlie Company, where he was awarded a Purple Heart. Upon being honorably discharged,

Joe returned home and attended Carnegie Tech before starting his own roofing company. After 30 years in the roofing business, Joe “retired” by joining the Operating Engineers Local 66, where he worked for another 15 years.

Joe also found joy in volunteering with his fellow veterans. He was involved with VFW Post 2754, the Marine Corps League, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 455.

Friends will be received on Saturday, September 18th from 2-6PM at DEVLIN FUNERAL HOME, INC. 806 Perry Hwy., Ross Twp. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 455, 7060 Highland Drive, Pgh, PA 15206.

Farewell and Semper Fi ~ Richard Sanderson

Richard L. “Rich” Sanderson, Passed away Thursday, June 24th at the age of 91.

He was predeceased by Pat, his beloved wife of 62 years. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his three daughters, Cheryl (the late Steve) Pool, Diane (Stephen Martin) and Nancy (Tim) Miller.  He is also survived by his son Richard.  He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Jessica Sanderson, Tim (Shawna) Miller, Sean (Erin) Miller, Rich Miller and Stephanie (Leo Davis) Pool and great grandchildren, Shane Ford, Luke and Claire Miller and Lakeson Davis.  He will be deeply missed by his cousin and best bud, Mary Porter.

Rich was a lifelong Pittsburgher and former Marine.

After his service, he attended the University of Pittsburgh.  His career began as a teacher at Shaler High School, moving on to US Steel and then to his own PR business.  Rich was a storyteller and writer who wrote newspaper columns and books.

He was a long time member of Elfinwild United Presbyterian Church and the Marine Corps League.  Always positive and with a great sense of humor, Rich touched the lives of everyone he met.  He will be sorely missed.

Visitation will be held at Bock Funeral Home, Ltd., 1500 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw, on Monday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

A Funeral service will be held at Elfinwild Presbyterian Church, Glenshaw, on Tuesday 11 AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, (al.org) or Gateway Hospice, 9380 McKnight Road Ste 201, Pgh, PA 15237.

On Tuesday, November 3, 2020, Robert J. Graham, Jr., of Pittsburgh peacefully passed away at the age of 85 in his home surrounded by family. Beloved husband of 52 years to Anna Marie (Namisnak) Graham; loving father of Joanna Frances (Edward J.) Konieczka and Monica Margaret Graham; cherished grandfather of Nathaniel Robert and Zachary Edward Konieczka; brother of Mary (Paul) Waronsky; also, uncle to many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by several siblings. Robert was a Sergeant in the US Marine Corp during the Korean War, a member of the Marine Corp League, Three Rivers Leatherneck Detachment 310, former chaplain of the West View VFW Post 2754 and the Observatory American Legion Post 81, and long time member of the Allegheny Elks Lodge, B.P.O.E. 339, Cedar Avenue. Family and friends will be received Sunday, 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00 pm at the Lawrence T. Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 460 Lincoln Avenue, Bellevue (face masks required). Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Church, 154 Orchard Avenue, Emsworth. (All family and friends please meet at the church, face masks required).

2020 Holiday Service Project

The Detachment is continuing to support the same Holiday Service Project that we have done since 2006. It will be modified slightly due to the pandemic restrictions. Last year the Detachment collected monetary contributions and toys & gifts for several deserving organizations. Janet used the donations to purchase additional toys & gifts. A carload of items went to North Hills Community Outreach. Items were also distributed to Genesis of Pittsburgh in Bellevue. They were extremely thankful for our generosity. This year the need will be greater than ever due to the effects on the economy caused by the pandemic. Because of the pandemic we will not be collecting items for VA Hospital patients this year.

We are going to begin the collections in October so that the items can be given to the organizations by mid-November.

WHAT:

  • Toys, gift items, especially needed are items for boys & teenagers; any Steelers items (shirts in large sizes); gift cards; even small toys & items less than $5 are greatly appreciated. Do not wrap the items.
  • Holiday gift-wrap & gift bags, ribbon & tape are also needed.
  • Monetary donations will be used to purchase toys & gifts & gift cards.

WHEN:

  • Toy & Gift items and Donations will be collected at the October Detachment meeting or can be sent to Janet at the address below.

HOW:

  • Bring your items or donations to the October Detachment meeting and give them to Karl Wilzer for Janet Lindner. Items can also be dropped off at Janet’s home. She will see that they are distributed to the organizations listed above.
  • Contributions by check can be sent to Janet Lindner, 930 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh, PA 15229. If possible, make the checks out to Janet Lindner to simplify the process. (All monies are accounted for and a report is prepared for the Detachment).

Ronald Keith Shorts ~Farewell and Semper Fi ~

Age 88, on Thursday, August 20, 2020 of West Mifflin, formerly of Brookline.Ronald Keith Shorts

Beloved husband of 36 years to Mary Lou Shorts; loving father of Deborah McGill, Ronald Keith (Amy) Shorts, Jr., Kathleen Moore, Beth Dugan, Donald Shorts and Daniel (Zoey) Shorts; stepfather of Frank Mundy and Daniel (Julia) Mundy; Popeye of Leigh Ann, Cody, Colton, Kasey, Max, Kyle, Jesse, Daniel, Brendan, Zackary, Ryan, Morgan, Connor and the late Patrick and Eric.

Also survived by 7 great-grandchildren.

Ronald served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

He had a long career in the industrial and power industries. Ron will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Visitation and services will be held privately. Interment will be in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies with full military honors.
