Location: Zoom, Facebook, YouTube
JOIN ON ZOOM
All Events | Online Events | VBC Happy Hour

Long before the Veterans Breakfast Club, Todd DePastino taught courses at Penn State and Waynesburg University titled “Vietnam in War and Peace.” In 2018 and again 2020, as the Director of the Veterans Breakfast Club, he finally got to lead a tour of Vietnam from Hanoi in the North to the Mekong Delta in the South.

The third VBC Vietnam tour with 20 travelers will leave in November. To mark this upcoming trip, Todd presents a lecture on the history and culture of Vietnam, focusing especially on the lessons learned while traveling in Vietnam. You’ll hear about its unusual geography, natural beauty, ancient culture, and vibrant economic life. We’ll also talk about the war, of course. How it’s remembered in Vietnam and how the Vietnamese treat Americans when they meet them.

Todd will speak for 45 minutes and then open up the Zoom room for questions and conversation.

You’ll learn the truth about the Tet Offensive, how Confucianism determines traffic patterns, why Vietnamese people are obsessed with your age, and the three things to know before crossing the street in Vietnam.

Join us for a fun night of history and travel talk!

2020 Holiday Service Project

October 14, 2020 by Staff

The Detachment is continuing to support the same Holiday Service Project that we have done since 2006. It will be modified slightly due to the pandemic restrictions. Last year the Detachment collected monetary contributions and toys & gifts for several deserving organizations. Janet used the donations to purchase additional toys & gifts. A carload of items went to North Hills Community Outreach. Items were also distributed to Genesis of Pittsburgh in Bellevue. They were extremely thankful for our generosity. This year the need will be greater than ever due to the effects on the economy caused by the pandemic. Because of the pandemic we will not be collecting items for VA Hospital patients this year.

We are going to begin the collections in October so that the items can be given to the organizations by mid-November.

WHAT:

  • Toys, gift items, especially needed are items for boys & teenagers; any Steelers items (shirts in large sizes); gift cards; even small toys & items less than $5 are greatly appreciated. Do not wrap the items.
  • Holiday gift-wrap & gift bags, ribbon & tape are also needed.
  • Monetary donations will be used to purchase toys & gifts & gift cards.

WHEN:

  • Toy & Gift items and Donations will be collected at the October Detachment meeting or can be sent to Janet at the address below.

HOW:

  • Bring your items or donations to the October Detachment meeting and give them to Karl Wilzer for Janet Lindner. Items can also be dropped off at Janet’s home. She will see that they are distributed to the organizations listed above.
  • Contributions by check can be sent to Janet Lindner, 930 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh, PA 15229. If possible, make the checks out to Janet Lindner to simplify the process. (All monies are accounted for and a report is prepared for the Detachment).

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide to this worthwhile project.

Coast Guard sets Francis Scott Key buoy in Baltimore

June 26, 2020 by Staff

Daniel Oyefusi of the Baltimore Sun reported that Coast Guard set Francis Scott Key buoy in Baltimore for 40th year, commemorating birthplace of national anthem on June 15th.

“Our crew is proud to carry on this annual Coast Guard tradition in commissioning the Francis Scott Key Memorial Buoy,” Lt. Justin Strassfield, commanding officer of the James Rankin, said in a news release. “The operation allows us to reflect on the distinctly American spirit of resiliency.”

Francis Scott Key memorial buoy on the Patapsco River marks the approximate location where he wrote the national anthem.
